Dead world. After the lights went out on our streets we knew we were on our own. It wasn’t temporary, it was totality. Panic, denial, fear, anger, it all came in one wave, and this wave swept everything in its path to the centres of all our cities.

Many turned on each other. Those who were still breathing recovered and banded in unbeatable groups who morphed, mutated, marched on. The individuals they... they began to fall away.

Aru did not fall. Aru watched and learned the patterns, compiled a field manual in his mind that would arm him, along with a steel-skinned Stoat for a companion, against his former brothers and sisters. They were monsters now, consuming the rotting and infected ones, eating beating hearts and drinking the mixed fluids seeping from the contracting carcasses of the remaining humans that moved in the shadows for food and shelter.

Aru could see and hear movements everywhere, at all times, from the underground. The Stoat could smell them, taste their mercury mouths. When they did surface they could feel the hatred in the world against them, for they were the old normal.

Aru couldn’t wait much longer, he must make a move, for this city is getting heavier and heavier, grounding down his bones to powder and his blood to dust.

With potential assault from all sides, he has never been so close to falling. The monsters and the shadows are getting closer. Fight their way out or wait and die, it was that simple but the pressure... His companion is ready and Aru knows it. This night will be blue, not black. This night will be true, no going back.

Aru is in a dead world and may already be dead, but the evil must not spread. Hatred for not having what once was is all consuming, it is a drain on the main energy vein. Time to end the decay and fight for a blue sky day.

There is life out there, life that is waiting to be released form the beast. Time to feast, Aru. Time to cut us some peace.
